E2K · LESSON 01

Korean Puts the Predicate at the End

Find the final action or state, then rebuild the thought with the Korean predicate at the end.

1 · START HERE

I drink coffee.

Do not translate from left to right. First find the person, the object, and the final action.

Ipersoncoffeeobjectdrinkfinal action

2 · THE CORE

Korean lets the predicate finish the sentence.

저는 커피를 마셔요.

I-는 / coffee-를 / drink-어요

I drink coffee.

Put the information that prepares the scene first. Let the action complete it at the end.

3 · DECISION PROCEDURE

Build the sentence in four visible moves.

  1. Underline the English action or state.
  2. Choose the Korean predicate.
  3. Move that predicate to the end.
  4. Add the supplied particles.

4 · PATTERN DRILL

Keep the frame. Change one item.

저는 커피를 마셔요.I drink coffee.
저는 물을 마셔요.I drink water.
저는 차를 마셔요.I drink tea.

5–6 · RECOGNITION & PRODUCTION

Choose first, then produce.

Choose: Which sentence means “Mina reads a book”?

① 미나는 읽어요 책을. ② 미나는 책을 읽어요.

Produce: Arrange: 공부해요 / 수진은 / 한국어를

________________________________

7 · ANSWERS AND WHY

② 미나는 책을 읽어요.

The object comes before the predicate. Production answer: 수진은 한국어를 공부해요.

8 · COMMON MISTAKES

Do not carry English order into Korean.

✕ 저는 마셔요 커피를.✓ 저는 커피를 마셔요.

This is a safe beginning pattern, not an absolute rule for every Korean sentence.
